Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy

“The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress.”

Though the MLK holiday is primarily a celebration of a civil rights leader and his fight for racial equality in America, it is also a day to celebrate a leader who believed in the union ideal and worker’s rights.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized what the success of unions in the early twentieth century had done for people suffering from injustice in the workplace, and had faith that these union workers would recognize their battle for dignity in the people he led during the civil rights movement.
