Chrysler's Big Bailout - At the end of the 1970's many of major American corporations were plagued by fiscal problems. On September 7, 1979 Chrysler Corporation announced that it was going to post record pre-tax losses for the year. An overstock of cars, and a three-week delay in starting production on their 1980 models, Chrysler was nearing record-setting pre-tax losses. Looking to cap the losses, Chrysler asked for roughly $1 billion in Federal assistance, took steps to unload the company's surplus of undesirable, boat-sized cars, and instituted a series of cost-saving measures.
