The Labor Technical College

The Labor Technical College is the training center for the New York City District Council of Carpenters. It conducts apprenticeship training for over 1,700 registered apprentices in six New York State Department of Labor approved apprenticeship programs.

The New York City District Council of Carpenters represents:

  1. Carpenters
  2. Floor coverers
  3. Cabinet makers
  4. Millwrights
  5. Dock builders
  6. Residential Carpenters
  7. Timbermen (Carpentry Program)

The apprenticeship programs are four-year programs, with the exception of Cabinet maker, which is a five-year program. Apprentices are scheduled for daytime training one week every eleven weeks, from September through June of each year of their apprenticeship for a total of four weeks a year (160 hours per year of related training.)

Apprentices must also work on construction job sites for signatory contractors for 1,840 hours per year as part of their on-the-job training requirement.

In addition to apprentice training the Labor Technical College offers skill advancement training for mechanics through the journey level training schedule.

Members interested in receiving a 2007-2008 Journey Level Skills Advancement Program schedule can call the school and a copy will be mailed to your residence. Additional copies may be picked up at the Labor Technical College office located on the 2nd floor during school hours.

Journey level courses are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays. Members may register for no more than two courses at a time. Members interested in registration are asked to call the Labor Technical College at 212.727.2224 during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
